Hamilton doing what Horner could no longer do: Being in love with Newey

Lewis Hamilton's smile said it all: Adrian Newey to Ferrari is a dream come true for the Brit. At the press conference, Hamilton even seemed to briefly forget that he is still racing for Mercedes in 2024. It seemed like he was already secretly dreaming of a romance with Newey.

With all the questions being asked about his future at Ferrari and how he answers them, it almost seems that Hamilton is already driving for Ferrari. The fact he was wearing a Mercedes outfit was one of the few reminders about his current team. With the news from Adrian Newey, Hamilton's move to Ferrari took centre stage once again.

"Very much so," Hamilton said with a grin from ear to ear when asked if he hopes Adrian Newey will come to Ferrari in 2025. Hamilton has never made it a secret that he would love to work with Newey. Newey also expressed that desire the other way around before, just as Newey once also wanted to work for Ferrari. As if it was meant to be. It all seems to have coincided now.

Why Hamilton speaks so highly about Newey

Hamilton's praise of Newey will, of course, help. Newey already regretted that he had never worked with Hamilton and Ferrari. The fact that the star driver looks like a teenager in love, knowing he can work with the top designer, must also please Newey. He is told by Red Bull Racing that his impact in recent years has been nil. That they can do without him.

The Briton was asked if Newey was on his list of people he would like to have on his move to Ferrari. Hamilton would not say anything about those personal conversations with Ferrari but did reveal that Newey would be at the top of that list.

Still, it is a remarkable statement for the man who won six world titles with Mercedes and one with McLaren. Apparently, Hamilton does not put any of his current or previous staff members higher on the list than a designer he has never worked with before.

Hamilton even attributed his 2008 World title at McLaren to Newey because, according to the Briton, he had only just left. In reality, Newey left McLaren for Red Bull Racing in 2006. So the car Hamilton used to win the world title in 2008 was no longer one by Newey.

Ferrari and Hamilton deliberately speak highly about Newey?

It could, of course, be good acting on Hamilton's part. Of course, he spoke to Frederic Vasseur and John Elkann about Newey's possible arrival. Of course, they will have discussed that they need to please him right now.

Ultimately, the ball is in Adrian Newey's court. He has to decide whether he still wants to embark on a new adventure in F1 in 2025. One thing Hamilton did get right: Newey is leaving Red Bull Racing because of the internal chaos. Hamilton is turning Newey back into an icon, which certainly won't lessen his chances.
